Corsair, 1st installment in a serialized novel, The Outer Pendulum

With rampant piracy and corruption bringing the human colony in the Hydra solar system to the brink of collapse, decorated ex-Alliance Navy officer, Eli Saffinger, is hired to protect a freighter that could single-handedly revitalize the young, fragile civilization.

Knowing the inevitable consequence of escorting such valuable cargo, Saffinger prepares to confront the most ruthless and dangerous privateer in the southern Messier region - a mission that many have undertaken but none have survived.

10,000 word first installment in The Outer Pendulum Saga

Excerpt from Corsair

Saffinger inched closer to the lieutenant.

"Tango is no pirate. He's a murderer. He does it for the sick
pleasure of watching unarmed ships go up in flames and hearing
thousands of silent screams burn up with them. That is a sociopath,
Lieutenant."

"Sir, I didn't mean any disrespect."

Saffinger stopped. He knew he had lost control. There was no reason
to go off on the lieutenant like he had. The man had done nothing
wrong. Saffinger realized for the first time that the Jalar monster
had finally gotten to him. Like the reptiles on earth, Tango had
slithered and hissed and injected a venom of fear inside generation
upon generation. It was no longer a personal vendetta, but a hatred
that seemed to stem from all irrational fears left in humanity.
Historians had for ages tried to explain why humans struck first in
the First Messier War - the technologically, intellectually, and
culturally inferior civilization - but never seemed to look beyond
the politics at the race's most base, instinctive response to the
unknown. Somewhere, deep inside, Saffinger knew he couldn't help how
he felt. There was a voice. A trigger. It was almost automatic. First
hate - then blame.

This is a great serialized story. I was only planning on downloading the first installment today, but I immediately downloaded the second and third as I got sucked in quickly. Interesting characters and very engaging plot. I enjoy Sci-Fi writing, but normally only read the most popular sagas once they finally drift onto my radar to save me the risk of potentially reading something dull, but I'm glad I decided to pick these up as they are anything but dull. Definitely worth reading and I only hope that the author decides to continue the story. I like the idea of a serialized novel as it is the equivalent of watching a TV show, and doesn't seem to be as big of a commitment of reading an entire novel all at once is.

Corsair Outer Pendulum Part 1 eBook Slava Heretz Reviews

This is a SHORT STORY it is not a book!!! It is 56 full size pages long on my iPad... I didn't do the word count but 10,000 words is what it claims and that is probably correct if somewhat misleading to buyers (a fact I have reported to as it seems a bit shady not to call it a short story). The writing was ok but definitely not worth the 99 cents when there so many authors providing entire novels for reasonable prices.
In Corsair author Slava Heretz quickly immerses the reader into a world where pirates and privateers rule the vacuum of space. At the point in time and space we join the life of central character, Captain Eli Saffinger, he is a battle weary charge unwilling to accept his next job arranged by his mysterious employer. A mission that will see him contracting for a company he deems to be 'slavers' and escorting a hugely valuable asset across the galaxy; A sure fire target for Pirates and very probable his personal nemesis, Tango, leader of the Jalars. Written with a great pace that will keep you gripped and with some fantastic descriptive writing, this short story will certainly leave fans of Sci-fi adventures wanting more.
I just finished reading Corsair. It was the best buck I have spent in a long time, a very pleasant surprise. it was a great fast read in a believable "universe"-using science fiction language and terms that we all know and can envision to form a visible believable story. It was well worth 10 times the price- I am looking forward to many sequels
Wonderful work Slava! I very much enjoyed the rich environment created in this first effort. I have just downloaded the second installment and will be spending part of my holiday weekend flipping the pages on my Android reader!

Also, not sure why others are so upset about the length of this book. The author makes clear in his description that "Corsair, [is a]1st installment in a serialized novel, The Outer Pendulum". It's quality not quantity, people!!!
I understand what the author is trying to do by making this novel a serialized installment, however he could do with a bit more length to each chapter. Otherwise it was a rather good read.
You have, the impression, of a Novela.
The Idea, ... was, sure, and, ...unique.
There's not, much There, ... to feed Upon.
Give, your audience, ... more, substance, ... to feed on.
This book is written in a good tradition of classic science fiction. It employs elements of adventure and futuristic, and yet plausible technology. You get to know the characters, and even get attached to some of them. For example, I found myself being worried about Captain Saffinger's safety during his interactions with treacherous reptile Tango. The author succeeds in creating tension, and drawing emotional reaction from the reader. There are good visual details in the story. For example, one can easily picture handsome Captain Saffinger "dressed in his perfectly ironed pre-flight officer uniform," or trace movement of destroyer /fighters "disappearing from grid, their warp bands leaving a bright silver streak outside the view screen." The story often reads like a movie script. I think this is due to the use of metaphors, detailed character and object descriptions, and dynamic dialogue. I love stories involving Pirates. It is good to see the site of adventure expanding beyond the Earthy oceans into space. Good thing - "The End" is not the end the story. It continues in the Letter of Marque, and later, in the Pirates of Omega Polaris.
